The Bernie's Buddies Fund provides financial assistance for dogs in our Rescue and Transport Program who test positive for Heartworm, a potentially fatal disease commonly found in dogs in the southeastern US. This fund pays for the treatment itself, plus the boarding costs for each dog during its recovery period.

We typically rescue 1–2 heartworm positive dogs each month. Treatment and boarding for each dog is very expensive, and can cost up to $500.

About Heartworm:
Heartworm is a small thread-like worm that is transmitted from one dog to another through mosquito bites. Treatment of heartworm involves weeks of discomfort for a dog, while the worms are being killed and expelled from them body. Treatment can be risky, but untreated dogs will eventually die from congestive heart failure. This potentially fatal disease can be easily prevented by giving your dog a monthly heartworm preventative, such as Heartgard, Revolution, or Sentinel.

We rely solely on donations to provide these dogs with the treatment they deserve. Please consider donating today to help more dogs like the ones pictured on the right!

Total number of dogs treated through this program: 36

In memory of Bernie, a very special rottweiler rescued from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
He will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on through the dogs we are able to save through the Bernie's Buddies heartworm fund.
